After three years in early access, Larian Studio's popular game Baldur's Gate 3 is finally receiving a retail launch on August 3. Alongside its official release, Nvidia has announced that DLSS 2 support will be included, allowing RTX gamers to take advantage of Nvidia's performance-enhancing upscaling technology from day one.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a turn-based RPG set in the Sword Coast region of the Forgotten Realms in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. The game emphasizes the gathering and management of a squad of fantasy heroes who embark on quests in a massive world, all while exploring their own individual stories. Combat in the game follows the ruleset of D&D 5e, providing players with a variety of strategies to achieve victory. Additionally, Baldur's Gate 3 offers both single-player and co-op modes, with 2000 interactive characters and 174 hours of cinematics.
While it seems peculiar for a major release not to support DLSS 3, Baldur's Gate 3 can still run smoothly without it. According to initial benchmarks from Nvidia, the mid-range RTX 4060 Ti achieves 78FPS at 4K with maxed-out settings using DLSS 2 Performance mode upscaling. Higher-end models such as the RTX 4070, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 offer even better performance.
In addition to DLSS, Baldur's Gate 3 also supports DLAA, which provides high-quality anti-aliasing without upscaling. Although DLAA may be more resource-intensive, the RTX 4090 achieves 150 fps in Nvidia's benchmarks, making it a viable option for those with powerful GPUs.
While Baldur's Gate 3 does not currently support other upscaling solutions like AMD's FSR 2 or Intel's XeSS, FSR 2 support is expected to arrive in September. It remains to be seen if XeSS will be implemented in the game.
In addition to the Baldur's Gate 3 update, Nvidia also shared news about other games receiving DLSS support, including Desordre, Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart, Lost Soul Aside, Remnant 2, and Grand Emprise: Time Travel Survival. The full list of games with DLSS support now exceeds 300, with 41 supporting DLSS 3.
