Comparing the Radeon RX 7800 XT and GeForce RTX 4070: A Comprehensive Review

In a previous review, the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT was praised for its value at $500 and its competition with the more expensive GeForce RTX 4070. However, the review was based on testing only 15 games. In this more in-depth review, a total of 45 games were tested to provide a comprehensive comparison between the $600 GeForce RTX 4070 and the $500 Radeon RX 7800 XT.

The test system used for these benchmarks included a Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor, a Gigabyte X670E Aorus Master motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory. The games were tested at resolutions of 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, with a total of 56 configurations tested.

In terms of performance, the Radeon RX 7800 XT showed clear victories over the GeForce RTX 4070 at lower resolutions. For example, at 1080p, the Radeon GPU was 22% faster, while at 1440p and 4K, it was 23% and 24% faster, respectively.

Some notable game performance differences were observed. For instance, Baldur's Gate 3, a newly released title sponsored by Nvidia, ran well on AMD hardware. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart performed better on the GeForce GPU, while Cyberpunk 2077 showed the Radeon GPU outperforming the GeForce GPU at all resolutions.

Fortnite, a popular game for competitive players, performed better in DX11 mode on the GeForce GPU. However, when ray tracing was enabled in Fortnite using DX12, the Radeon GPU showed a marked improvement over the GeForce GPU.

Other games such as Resident Evil 4, Spider-Man Remastered, Hogwarts Legacy, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor showed varying performance results but generally demonstrated the competitive performance of both GPUs.

Overall, this comprehensive review provides a detailed comparison of performance between the Radeon RX 7800 XT and GeForce RTX 4070 in a range of games and resolutions.
