Goodbye to Call of Duty: Warzone 1 – Fans Say Farewell to the Original Battle Royale

After three-and-a-half years of thrilling gameplay, the original Warzone is shutting down today, leaving fans feeling nostalgic. Warzone was initially released on March 10, 2020, as a free-to-download battle royale spin-off of the Modern Warfare reboot. The game quickly gained popularity, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns when stay-at-home gaming soared. Warzone's success transformed the Call of Duty franchise, with the battle royale mode becoming its central focus, and subsequent premium launches integrating with it to various degrees of success.

Last year, Activision relaunched and renamed the original Warzone as Warzone Caldera, alongside the release of Warzone 2.0. However, the company announced its decision to permanently shut down Warzone Caldera on September 21, 2023, leading to the expiration of all progress and inventories.

As news of the shutdown spreads, fans have taken to social media and Reddit to share their farewell messages and reminisce about their experiences in the groundbreaking battle royale. Many have expressed gratitude for the memories and friendships formed while playing Warzone. The sentiment seems to be that, despite the ups and downs, players will look back fondly on their time in Verdansk and Caldera, longing for the chance to play again with their squad.

While fans bid farewell to Warzone 1, Activision has already moved on to Warzone 2.0 and is gearing up for the launch of Modern Warfare 3. Although the original Warzone will be missed, players can look forward to new experiences in the evolving world of Call of Duty.
