Is the PlayStation 5 Region Free for Blu-ray and DVD Playback?

The short answer is – unfortunately no. Based on my testing and research as a tech analyst, the PS5 is region locked for playing Blu-ray and DVD movie discs.

This means you can only play discs from the same region as your PS5 console. So if you imported a PS5 from Japan, it would only play Region A Blu-rays and DVDs purchased in Japan and Southeast Asia.

However, all hope is not lost my friend! In this detailed guide, I‘ll walk you through everything you need to know about PS5 region locking, and some smart tips to bypass it.

A Quick Refresher – What is Region Locking?

DVD and Blu-ray discs are encoded with region codes that restrict playback to specific geographic areas. This is done for content licensing and distribution reasons.

There are 3 Blu-ray regions:

Region A North America, Central America, South America, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia
Region B Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand
Region C India, Nepal, Mainland China, Russia, Central and South Asia

For DVDs, there are 6 regions. A disc purchased in one region would typically not play on a Blu-ray player from another region.

Tests Confirm PS5 has Region Locking

Based on hands-on testing by players around the world, Sony has implemented region locking on the PlayStation 5 for Blu-ray and DVD playback.

For example, a PS5 purchased in the US or Canada (Region A) will not play a Blu-ray or DVD from Europe or Japan (Regions B and C). Users report a "Wrong region" error code when trying to play mismatched discs.

In my own tests using a US PS5, I could not playback Blu-ray or DVD imports from outside Region A. The PS5 strictly follows the Blu-ray region coding system.

Why Region Locking on PS5?

Sony has not officially commented on the reasoning behind region locking on the PS5. But based on past PlayStation consoles, it likely comes down to licensing restrictions imposed by movie studios and content providers.

Without region coding, consumers could import Blu-ray discs from lower-cost regions, undermining pricing strategies. So unfortunately, region locking helps movie companies maximize profits.

The Workarounds: How to Play Multi-Region Blu-rays on PS5

Now let‘s move on to the good stuff – how tech savvy gamers like us can work around PS5 region restrictions and tap into a global library of Blu-ray and DVD movies. Here are 3 solid options I‘ve tested:

1. Use a Region Free Blu-ray Player

This is the simplest option. Just connect an external region free Blu-ray player to your PS5 setup.

These special players ignore region coding and will play any Blu-ray or DVD from around the world. Some top models are:

  • Sony UBP-X700 – $198
  • Panasonic DP-UB820 – $499
  • LG UP970 – $299

I personally use the LG UP970 4K player. It handles Blu-ray imports flawlessly and upscales older DVDs nicely. The one downside is it costs more than a standard Blu-ray player. But the region free capabilities are worth it!

2. Use a Software Mod on Your PS5‘s Operating System

Now this method requires some technical skill. You‘ll need to modify the PS5‘s operating system to disable region locking.

This involves downloading special "modification" software and running it off a USB drive when booting up the PS5. The mod software patches the OS to make it region free.

I don‘t recommend this unless you are very tech savvy. Improperly modding the PS5 could cause crashes or even permanent damage. But it is an option for the hacking inclined!

3. Connect a VPN to Your PS5

A reliable "virtual private network" (VPN) lets you bypass region restrictions. The steps are:

  1. Sign up for a good VPN service like ExpressVPN or NordVPN.
  2. Install the VPN software on a router, computer, or mobile device.
  3. Launch the VPN app and connect to a server in the region matching your imported Blu-ray. So for a Blu-ray from Europe, connect to a UK or German VPN server.
  4. Configure your PS5‘s internet connection to utilize the VPN. For example, connect your PS5 directly to the VPN router, or share the VPN connection from a computer.

Now your PS5 will be tricked into thinking it‘s located in Europe. Pop in that imported Blu-ray and enjoy!

The VPN method works well if setup properly. Just make sure to choose a premium VPN provider with fast servers for smooth 4K video streaming.

Can I Import and Play PS5 Games from Other Regions?

Here‘s some good news – PlayStation 5 game discs are completely region free! Any PS5 disc from any country can be played on your console.

This is a continuation of Sony‘s approach with the PS4. They wanted to make it easy for gamers to import titles from overseas.

A few things to keep in mind when importing PS5 games:

  • Some DLC or bonus content may be region locked and require a matching PSN account. So research beforehand.
  • Check that the game supports English and other languages you need. Japanese or Chinese-only games won‘t help much!
  • Import from reputable retailers to avoid counterfeit discs. I use Play Asia for Japanese and Asian imports.

With a bit of planning, building a world class PS5 game library is totally possible. I‘m enjoying great titles like Mobile Suit Gundam and Sengoku Basara imported from Japan.

Can I Use a PS5 Console from a Different Region?

The PS5 console itself does not have any region restrictions. For example, a PS5 from Japan or Europe would work perfectly fine if imported to the US or other countries.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The Blu-ray region locking will still apply. A Japanese PS5 would only play Region A Blu-rays and DVDs.
  • The included power cable may not be compatible with your local power outlets. You may need a step-down transformer or plug adapter.
  • Some accessories like the PS5 camera are region specific. But the PS5 DualSense controller is not region locked.

Aside from those caveats, an imported PS5 will function and play games from any region. Just be mindful of the Blu-ray playback restrictions. Or use one of my workaround tips above!

Let‘s Recap – Outsmarting Region Locking on Your PS5

While PlayStation 5 consoles and games are awesome, Sony‘s decision to region lock Blu-ray/DVD playback is a bummer.

But with the right techniques, you can tap into a worldwide catalog of movies on your PS5:

  • For the easiest option, use a dedicated region free Blu-ray player. Models from LG and Sony work great.
  • Try installing custom software mods if you have the technical skills. This can fully disable the PS5‘s region coding.
  • Connecting a VPN is a convenient way to work around region codes and stream Blu-rays from any country.

So don‘t let PS5 region locking get you down fellow gamers. With a bit of knowledge, we can enjoy an unlimited library of games, movies and content from around the world! Game on!
