Nebraska Quarterback Jeff Sims’ Status Uncertain Due to Ankle Injury

Nebraska Cornhuskers coach Matt Rhule has not confirmed whether quarterback Jeff Sims will start in the upcoming game against Northern Illinois due to a lingering left ankle injury. Rhule stated on Thursday that he is unsure of Sims' status and mentioned that Sims is progressing and feels like he's getting better.

Earlier in the week, Rhule had declared Sims as the team's starting quarterback despite his performance in the first two games of the 2023 season. Sims has thrown four interceptions and lost two fumbles so far. However, he has completed 20 of 34 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown. Sims has also showcased his skills on the ground, rushing for a total of 158 yards, including a 57-yard score against Colorado.

In the event that Sims is unable to play, Nebraska has backup options in Heinrich Haarberg and Chubba Purdy. However, Purdy has been dealing with a groin injury and is not at 100 percent according to Rhule. Purdy is the younger brother of NFL quarterback Brock Purdy.

It remains to be seen whether Sims will be fit to start for the Cornhuskers in their upcoming game against Northern Illinois. The team will likely evaluate Sims' progress and make a decision closer to game day….
