Qualcomm Announces New Snapdragon G Series Processors for Handheld Gaming

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest Snapdragon G Series processors designed specifically for handheld gaming. The series includes three processors – the Snapdragon G1x Gen 1, Snapdragon G2x Gen 1, and Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 – each offering varying levels of power and performance to cater to different gaming needs.

According to Mithun Chandrasekhar, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., these processors will provide gamers with the ability to play their favorite titles across different devices and ecosystems, whether it's their console, PC, or on a cloud service. For gamers who prefer dedicated handheld gaming devices, the Snapdragon G Series processors offer an optimal gaming experience.

The Snapdragon G1x Gen 1 processor is designed for fanless gaming handhelds primarily intended for cloud streaming. It features a Qualcomm Kryo CPU (8 Core) paired with the Qualcomm Adreno A11 GPU.

The Snapdragon G2x Gen 1 processor is a step up from the base option and supports both full-featured mobile and cloud gaming. It supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6/6E, thanks to the Qualcomm FastConnect 6700 Mobile Connectivity System. This processor combines the Kryo CPU (8 Core) with a gaming-optimized Adreno A21 GPU and the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF System.

The flagship processor of the series is the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, which offers 30% faster CPU performance and 2x faster GPU performance compared to its predecessor. It supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, game super resolution, XR glass tethering, low-latency premium Bluetooth audio with Snapdragon Sound Technology Suite, and high-speed wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi 7 High-Band Simultaneous (HBS) and 5G sub-6 and mmWave bands. The Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 utilizes the Qualcomm Kryo CPU (8 Core) and Adreno A32 GPU.

Qualcomm is collaborating with various companies such as AyaNeo, Huaqin, Inventec, and Thundercomm to develop gaming handheld devices powered by Snapdragon G Series processors. These devices are expected to hit the market soon.

The Snapdragon G Series processors are part of Qualcomm's long-standing line of system-on-chip (SoC) products that combine a CPU and GPU for mobile devices. Qualcomm is recognized as a leading manufacturer of mobile phone gaming processors.

The Snapdragon G Series processors aim to address the growing demand for mobile gaming by providing powerful performance suitable for cloud streaming and local gaming. While performance is crucial, battery life remains an essential factor for handheld gaming devices. Manufacturers need to focus on improving battery life to establish themselves as the ultimate choice for handheld gaming.
