Resident Evil 4 VR Mode: Stepping into Leon’s Shoes for Gruesome Survival

Resident Evil 4 VR Mode offers players the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the world of Resident Evil 4 and take on the role of Leon Kennedy in a series of challenging survival missions. This free DLC, exclusively available on the PlayStation 5 version of the game, promises to provide the ultimate immersive experience, allowing players to dive into Leon's full story campaign in virtual reality.

During a demo at the Tokyo Game Show, players had the chance to experience the game's opening sections in VR. The first-person perspective intensifies the sense of dread, thanks to the realistic forest surroundings and the dark, oppressive atmosphere rendered on the PS VR2's 4K HDR display. As players cautiously explore their environment, the immersive visuals make even simple tasks, such as investigating carcasses on the road, feel unsettlingly real.

One of the standout features of the PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller is its ability to mimic the actions of Leon in the game. Players can wield Leon's iconic knife and various other weapons by physically swinging their hands around. Equipping and using the knife is a particularly thrilling experience in VR. By timing their swings to coincide with enemy attacks, players can execute impressive parries, turning a dire situation into an advantage. Once the enemy is disoriented, players can follow up with a melee attack, creating a satisfying gameplay loop.

Reloading weapons is another aspect that becomes truly immersive in VR. Players can holster handguns on their waist and reload them by physically ejecting the magazine, grabbing a spare magazine from their hip, and inserting it into the gun. This mechanic adds tension and an extra layer of realism to combat encounters, making each reload a unique and satisfying experience.

Although the demo at TGS only showcased the opening sections of the game, the fresh perspective offered by VR has already heightened the excitement for the full experience. Resident Evil 4 VR Mode promises to be the perfect way to revisit this beloved classic when it launches later this year.
