Riot Games Introduces New K-pop Sensation for League of Legends World Championship 2023

Riot Games has announced the introduction of a new K-pop artist, NewJeans, for the highly anticipated League of Legends World Championship 2023. NewJeans will perform the official championship song, “GODS”, which is already making waves in the music industry.

The song was co-written by Riot Games' renowned songwriters, Sebastien Najand and Alex Seaver of Mako, who have previously worked on hits like “Legends Never Die”, “RISE”, “Awaken”, and many other songs for Arcane. Fans can watch the music video for “GODS” on YouTube or listen to it on various music platforms starting from October 4th, 12:00 PM (Thai time).

Carrie Dunn, Head of Creative Development and Global Esports at Riot Games, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that the World Championship being held in Korea and NewJeans' star power made this partnership feel like a cultural celebration. She described “GODS” as a powerful blend of grand production and NewJeans' captivating vocals, capturing both the struggle and glory awaited by players at Worlds.

NewJeans, speaking about the song, shared their excitement about the opportunity to contribute to the World Championship's official song, stating that it was unlike any song they had recorded before. They expressed gratitude for this incredible opportunity that allowed them to explore and showcase new facets hidden within their unique vocal style. They hoped the song would inspire and uplift the audience.

Maria Egan, Head of Music and Global Entertainment at Riot Games, celebrated the collaboration with NewJeans for Worlds 2023, calling it a historic moment for the music industry and a significant milestone for esports fans worldwide. She mentioned that NewJeans joins the ranks of previous superstar artists like Imagine Dragons, Zedd, and Lil Nas X, who have lent their voices to the unique spectacle within the esports community.

The World Championship 2023 music video will tell the story of professional player Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu, from his introduction to League during high school to overcoming incredible challenges in the World Championship 2022. Dunn mentioned that the partnership turning into a rivalry story was something that resonated with every athlete, and they believed “GODS” would lead to an unbelievable World Championship.

The League of Legends World Championship, also known as Worlds, is the pinnacle of LoL Esports competition, where the top teams from the nine regional leagues compete for the title of world champion. The event is held after the conclusion of regular season play in rotating host regions each year. The tournament spans over a month, and it is the most widely watched esports event, with Worlds 2021 averaging over 30 million average-minute-audience (AMA), over 73 million peak concurrent users (PCU), and over 1 billion hours watched. It stands as one of the largest and most popular gaming and sports events in the world.
