Sony PlayStation Portal Won’t be Available in Australia

Sony's new gaming handheld, the PlayStation Portal, will not be released in Australia alongside its U.S. launch. Despite the lack of Australian-specific pricing and information, Sony announced that the device will be available for pre-order on November 15th through its PlayStation Direct website. The Portal will launch in the U.S., U.K., and select European countries, with limited availability in Canada and Japan.

Though Sony's decision to limit pre-orders may indicate either limited supply or high sales expectations, the device has garnered attention for its limitations. Priced at $200, the Portal does not support PlayStation's cloud game streaming and requires a separate PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, which has increased by $40 per year.

The Portal features an 8-inch LCD screen attached to a DualSense controller, offering the same functionality as the PlayStation 5 controller. However, it is limited to Wi-Fi connectivity, requiring a minimum of 5 Mbps for remote play and recommended speeds of 15 Mbps for optimal performance.

Additionally, the Portal does not support Bluetooth, instead relying on Sony's proprietary PlayStation Link technology to connect to its Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset, priced at $150 and $200 respectively. To achieve a wireless experience, users can purchase Sony's proprietary tech for at least $350.

While the PlayStation Portal won't be available in Australia, gaming enthusiasts still have plenty of options to choose from, including streaming handhelds like AYN's Odin 2 and the cheaper Steam Decks.
