Sony’s Plan to Focus on First-Party Titles: CEO Jim Ryan’s Strategy

However, recent events, such as the PS Plus price hike and leaked data on profitability, have pushed PlayStation backward. To revive the platform, PlayStation President and CEO Jim Ryan has come up with a plan.

In a recent interview, Ryan stated that Sony will be less reliant on third-party titles and royalties. Their main focus will be on creating more first-party games. First-party companies, like Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games, develop games exclusively for PlayStation, while third-party games can be published on other platforms. With this shift in focus, fans can expect more mergers and acquisitions deals as Sony expands its existing studios.

The strategy behind emphasizing first-party titles is to surface more exclusive games on the PlayStation platform. Ryan believes that Sony's acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion can be even more significant than the $69 billion deal between Call of Duty publisher Activision and Microsoft. According to Ryan, PlayStation Plus is superior to Xbox Game Pass, despite the popularity of the latter. He states that publishers unanimously do not like Game Pass because it is value destructive on both individual and industry levels.
