Star top laner TheShy returns to Worlds stage with Weibo Gaming

Weibo Gaming's top laner Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok is set to compete at the biggest League of Legends international tournament, Worlds 2023, in South Korea. The team qualified for the tournament by winning the LPL regional finals. In the finals, they defeated Top Esports and Edward Gaming to secure the 4th seed.

TheShy's last appearance at Worlds was in 2019 with Invictus Gaming, where they finished in 3rd-4th place. The year before, Invictus Gaming won the tournament, becoming the first-ever LPL team to lift the Summoner's Cup.

TheShy joined Weibo Gaming at the start of the 2022 season. The team underwent roster changes, and the current lineup includes former Royal Never Give Up mid laner Li “Xiaohu” Yuan-Hao and Worlds 2019 champion Liu “Crisp” Qing-Song in the support role.

To qualify for Worlds 2023, Weibo Gaming had to compete in the LPL regional finals. JD Gaming and Bilibili Gaming secured their spots through championship points, while LNG Esports qualified by winning their first series against Edward Gaming in the regional finals. Weibo Gaming narrowly beat Top Esports in a 3-2 victory to set up a showdown with EDG.

In the series against EDG, Weibo Gaming showcased their strategies and gameplay. They won the first game convincingly, with TheShy playing Ornn and absorbing pressure while the rest of the team focused on the bot side. With a strong early lead, they secured a quick victory.

The second game was more closely contested, but EDG managed to turn the tide in their favor with a decisive Baron fight. They capitalized on the Baron buff to secure another team fight win and tie the series 1-1.

In the third game, Weibo Gaming returned to their successful playbook from the first game. TheShy played a tank, and the team focused on the bot side of the map. With a strong performance from their bot laner Light, they closed out the game and took the lead in the series.

Despite a promising start for EDG in the fourth game, Weibo Gaming found an opening to turn the game in their favor. They secured Baron uncontested and won a key team fight in the late game, ultimately winning the series 3-1 and securing their spot at Worlds 2023.

Weibo Gaming's qualification for Worlds 2023 marks a triumphant return to the international stage for TheShy, who will be looking to make his mark once again.
