The Making of Karateka: An Interactive Documentary

The Making of Karateka, developed by Digital Eclipse, is set to launch on multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG on August 29, with a release on Switch in September. Priced at $19.99, this interactive documentary explores the story behind one of the most influential games of all time.

Karateka was created in 1984 by Jordan Mechner, a college student and the creator of Prince of Persia. The game quickly became a best-seller and made a significant impact on the gaming industry. The Making of Karateka takes players on a journey through the game's development process, featuring design documents, playable prototypes, and new video content. It allows users to explore interactive timelines at their own pace, providing a museum-like experience.

In addition to the documentary, players can enjoy pixel-perfect versions of the original Karateka games, along with never-before-seen early prototypes. The remastered version of Karateka, called Karateka Remastered, includes additional content, developer commentary, achievements, and more. The collection also includes Deathbounce: Rebounded, a fast-paced twin-stick shooter based on an unpublished prototype by Jordan Mechner.

Karateka is considered a groundbreaking masterpiece for its time, being one of the first games to incorporate cinematic scenes, a moving original soundtrack, rotoscoped animation, and a Hollywood-style love story. Its influence can be seen in the many games that followed its release.

The Making of Karateka is part of the Gold Master Series by Digital Eclipse, known for their innovative approach to documenting the history of iconic games and their creators. This interactive documentary format aims to provide a comprehensive package that explores the shared history of games.
