The Overwatch League in Talks with Third-Party Organizers for 2024 Season

The Overwatch League (OWL) is currently engaged in discussions with ESL FACEIT Group and WDG Esports to organize its upcoming 2024 season, as reported by GGRecon. ESL FACEIT Group is expected to oversee operations in North America and Europe, while WDG Esports will handle production in Asia.

However, these negotiations are still in their early stages, pending a crucial vote by OWL franchises to determine the league's future. If the teams decide not to continue with the Overwatch League, they will receive a one-time termination payment of $6 million. On the other hand, franchises that vote to continue will have to function without the support of Activision Blizzard and seek alternative arrangements for the league's operations.

At present, it remains uncertain whether ESL FACEIT Group and WDG Esports would provide white-label production or organizing services, which would involve their names not being directly associated with OWL, or if they would incorporate the league into their existing circuits.

The decision regarding the league's continuation hinges on the approval of a supermajority of two-thirds of OWL franchises, as outlined in the new agreement. Consequently, the progress of discussions with ESL FACEIT Group and WDG Esports will depend on the outcome of this future vote.

ESL FACEIT Group already has ample experience with other Activision Blizzard titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile and the Call of Duty League, thanks to its acquisition of Vindex and Esports Engine. Conversely, WDG Esports has been involved in Overwatch Esports since 2019, having previously undertaken production for Overwatch Contenders and the Korean OWL broadcast.

While some teams have hinted at their intentions for the vote, with Guangzhou Charge's Li ‘Xerneas' Xianyao mentioning their plans to accept the $6 million payout, and Chengdu Hunters announcing their departure from the league, fans will have to wait until after the season to learn the fate of OWL.
