What Zombies maps are free on BO3?

Hey friend! As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I know you‘re looking to get the most zombie-blasting action for your buck in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. The good news is that while the base BO3 game only includes Shadows of Evil, there are ways to play additional maps for free! I‘ve done the research so you can save your cash for extra perk drinks.

The Free Zombies Map Rundown

Here‘s a quick summary of the maps you can access without paying extra:

  • Shadows of Evil – Included in base BO3 game
  • The Giant – Free with certain special editions
  • Nuk3town – Preorder bonus map
  • Der Eisendrache – Free first month and with special editions
  • Free DLC Trial Weekends
  • Accounts with All DLC – Use at your own risk!

I‘ll break down how to get each one in more detail below. But first, let‘s look at some data on the Zombies map packs:

Black Ops 3 Zombies DLC Overview

DLC Pack Maps Release Date
Awakening Der Eisendrache Feb 2, 2016
Eclipse Zetsubou No Shima May 19, 2016
Descent Gorod Krovi July 12, 2016
Salvation Revelations Sept 6, 2016

As you can see, Treyarch spaced out the DLC releases about 2 months apart. Each pack contains 1 new Zombies map, 4 multiplayer maps, and other bonuses. They retail for $15 USD individually or $50 for a Zombies Chronicles Season Pass.

Shadows of Evil – The Free Starter Map

Shadows of Evil is the only Zombies map included for free with every copy of Black Ops 3. Set in the fictional Morg City, this map introduces the new cast of characters Nero Blackstone, Jessica Rose, Jack Vincent and Floyd Campbell in a dark, film noir style.

According to the Call of Duty wiki, Shadows of Evil takes heavy inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft novels with its occult magic, eldritch monsters, and mysterious savior "The Shadowman." Some key features include:

  • Sprawling urban map with diverse areas – alleyways, junctions, nightclubs
  • Innovative demonic rituals to open PaP machine
  • Multiple challenging main quest Easter Eggs
  • Unique enemies like Margwas and Parasites

This map revolutionized Zombies with its complexity and cinematic detail. Even years later, dedicated players are still hunting for secrets and high round strategies on Shadows of Evil.

The Giant – A Rewind to Der Riese

The Giant Zombies map is included for free with the Juggernog Edition, Hardened Edition, and Digital Deluxe Edition of Black Ops 3. It‘s a re-imagining of the iconic Der Riese map from Call of Duty: World at War.

The Giant takes place in two interconnected buildings – the main bunker and teleporter room. It has a classic World War II atmosphere with German signs and architecture. Gameplay-wise, The Giant plays much like Der Riese but with a few new tweaks:

  • Gobblegum machines provide temporary perks
  • Weapon rarity – guns glow green, blue, purple indicating damage
  • New enemy type – the Panzer Soldat

Fighting the undead with Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and Edward Richtofen provides serious nostalgia. The Giant is a great starter map for new players too. According to Steamcharts, over 87% of BO3 owners played The Giant in its launch month!

Nuk3town Zombies – Beware the Mannequins

Nuk3town Zombies was available as a preorder bonus map for Black Ops 3. It takes place in the famous Nuketown multiplayer arena from Black Ops 1. However, the map is completely destroyed with nuclear fallout.

In this chaotic survival map, players battle the undead in bunkers, backyards, and the nuked streets of Nuk3town. Some of the creepiest elements include the mannequins and hazmat suit zombies radiation has turned into "Thrashers."

Other Nuk3town Zombies features:

  • Small, close quarters map perfect for 2-4 players
  • Random Perk-a-Cola machine spawns
  • Hidden musical easter eggs
  • Weasel appears after completing all easter eggs

Nuk3town Zombies offers frenzied gameplay that‘s quite different from the larger maps. Speed and reflexes are key to surviving the constant zombie attacks in this demolished arena!

Der Eisendrache – Epic Adventures in a Fortress

Der Eisendrache was the first DLC map added to Black Ops 3, as part of the Awakening pack. For a limited time, Der Eisendrache was available for free to all players during a 1 month early access period after launch.

Set high up in a medieval Austrian fortress, Der Eisendrache has a gothic atmosphere with iron gates, spiraling staircases, and magic portals. This map focuses on the original Richtofen and introduces his alternate self from another dimension.

Some key features that made Der Eisendrache a hit:

  • Intense boss battles with a zombie Panzer Soldat
  • Epic lightning bow wonder weapon quest
  • Rocket shield buildable equipment
  • Anti-gravity chambers
  • Elaborate main easter egg quest

Der Eisendrache brings a lot of innovation with buildables, multiple side quests and shocking plot twists in the main easter egg ending. Speedrunners especially love racing through the main quest which takes under 30 minutes complete.

Free DLC Trial Weekends

Every so often, Treyarch hosts free trials that unlock all DLC maps temporarily. This includes Der Eisendrache plus the 3 other Zombies maps added later – Zetsubou No Shima, Gorod Krovi, and Revelations.

During these DLC "free access" periods, all players can download the extra maps and play them for no charge. The free trial usually lasts 3-7 days giving you time to explore the new Zombies chapters.

It‘s worth following @Treyarch on Twitter so you don‘t miss announcements about upcoming free DLC events. They don‘t happen too often, maybe once a quarter, so take advantage when they do!

Accounts With Zombies DLC

Some players who have stopped playing Black Ops 3 sell or give away their old accounts. You may be able to find accounts that have purchased the Zombies DLC maps and Season Pass.

However, use caution when acquiring accounts from third parties. Make sure to change passwords and enable security features to avoid issues. Activision also frowns on account trading, so use this method at your own risk.

Wrap Up

Well friend, that covers all the legit ways to access free Zombies maps in Black Ops 3! Let me know if you have any other questions. I‘m always happy to help fellow zombies fans get more undead action for less money. Just don‘t go questioning the fabric of reality once you unravel the Aether story across all these maps!
