Will Kiriko be Free in Overwatch 2?

The short answer is – yes, Kiriko can be unlocked for free in Overwatch 2 through progression, challenges or for Owning Overwatch 1. However, it will require some time and effort. Let me walk you through the details, my friend.

As an avid Overwatch fan, I‘ve done extensive research on how to get the cool new support hero Kiriko without spending money. Here‘s everything you need to know.

Can I get Kiriko for free if I owned Overwatch 1?

If you owned the original Overwatch prior to June 23, 2022, then absolutely! Blizzard is rewarding loyal fans with the Overwatch 2 Founder‘s Pack. This grants you immediate access to Kiriko at launch, along with:

  • Exclusive Legendary skins for Doomfist, Sombra, Bastion and Soldier: 76
  • Overwatch 2 Premium Battle Pass for Season 1
  • 3000 Overwatch Coins to spend in-game

It‘s a sweet deal for OG Overwatch players. Simply log into Overwatch 2 before the end of Season 2 and Kiriko will automatically be there, free for you to play!

What about unlocking Kiriko through the free Battle Pass?

For new players starting fresh in Overwatch 2, you‘ll have to put in some work to add Kiriko to your roster. She can be unlocked for free via the basic Season 1 Battle Pass, but it‘s going to take awhile.

Based on my calculations, you‘ll need to grind around 50 hours in Quick Play matches to earn enough Battle Pass XP. Here‘s a breakdown of the math:

  • Kiriko unlocks at Tier 55 of the free track
  • You earn approximately 1 Tier per hour of Quick Play
  • So 55 hours of gameplay = Tier 55 unlocked

It‘s a decent amount of gameplay, but any progress rolls over between seasons. Keep chipping away at those challenges and Kiriko will be yours! I‘m personally aiming to unlock her by mid-Season 2.

What about the unlock challenges – are they faster?

If you don‘t want to rely on the Battle Pass, Blizzard has also implemented special challenges that unlock Kiriko:

Challenge Requirement
Play Quick Play matches 50 matches
Play Unranked matches 25 matches
Play Competitive matches 15 matches

After completing around 150 matches across all modes, you‘ll hit the thresholds needed to unlock Kiriko. This is a bit faster than the Battle Pass, but still requires some heavy grinding – about 25 hours of total playtime.

Personally, I‘m tackling these challenges in tandem with the Battle Pass. That way I maximize my chances of getting Kiriko ASAP!

Is Kiriko worth the effort for free players?

As a support main myself, I think Kiriko is absolutely worth the effort! She brings some awesome abilities to the table:

  • Wall Climb – This mobility lets her reach unexpected angles to evade and surprise enemies.
  • Kunai – Her throwing daggers can dish out solid damage if you have good aim.
  • Protection Suzu – Her heal and cleanse helps sustain teammates through big damage.
  • Kitsune Rush – The dash lets her reposition quickly to escape danger.

Kiriko is great for players who like making big plays as a healer. Her kit encourages an aggressive support style focused on swift positioning.

Plus, Kiriko has a high skill ceiling so mastering her abilities feels very rewarding! I‘ve been having a blast learning tech like animation cancels, headshot aiming, and climbing rollouts.

For free players, she adds valuable versatility to your hero pool and enables new fun strategies. Well worth the effort!

What about Kiriko‘s new Amaterasu skin – can I get it free?

I‘ve got some bad news here. Kiriko‘s upcoming Amaterasu mythical skin in Season 3 can only be unlocked through the premium Battle Pass.

Based on datamining, it will likely unlock at Tier 80. That means you have to purchase the premium pass upfront to immediately claim the skin.

Unfortunately there is no way for free players to earn this skin during Season 3 through progression. You‘ll have to pay $10 if you want the amazing Amaterasu look when it releases.

But don‘t fret – we can hope that Kiriko‘s skins return in later seasons or special events! Stay tuned.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, new Overwatch 2 players can absolutely unlock Kiriko without paying a dime through some dedicated playtime. Complete challenges or work through the free Battle Pass tiers gradually but steadily.

For original Overwatch owners, be sure to claim your Founder‘s Pack goodies for instant Kiriko access! She‘s a fun, high-skill support that is worth adding to your roster.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I‘m happy to help fellow freeloading gamers like us get the most out of Overwatch 2. Stay legendary out there.
