Will PS Plus extra games be free? The Ultimate Guide

PlayStation Plus‘ free games for the Extra and Premium tiers have been announced for January 2023. The middle and top tiers will be adding new games for subscribers to play from Tuesday, January 17. Extra gives users a library of hundreds of games to download to PS4 and PS5, rotating in and out like a video streamer.

An Overview of PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus is Sony‘s premium online service for PlayStation consoles. There are currently 3 tiers of PlayStation Plus:

  • Essential – $9.99/month. Includes online multiplayer access, free monthly games, and exclusive discounts.
  • Extra – $14.99/month. Includes all Essential benefits plus a catalog of 400+ PS4 and PS5 games.
  • Premium – $17.99/month. Includes all Extra benefits plus 340 more games, cloud streaming, and time-limited game trials.

The Extra and Premium tiers give you access to a rotating selection of games that you can download and play as long as you remain a subscriber. New games are added periodically while others are removed.

Are games free on PlayStation Plus Extra?

Yes, the games included in the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog can be downloaded and played for free, as long as you maintain an active Extra subscription. You do not need to purchase the games individually.

The Extra tier gives you access to a library of over 400 PS4 and PS5 games to download. Some of the highlights in the catalog include hits like Red Dead Redemption 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel‘s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Remastered.

When Sony adds new games to the Extra catalog each month, subscribers can immediately download those games at no additional cost. The only catch is that downloaded games are only playable as long as you‘re subscribed to Extra. If your membership lapses, you‘ll lose access until you resubscribe.

What are the PS Plus extra games for Jan 2023?

Here are the games being added to the PlayStation Plus Extra lineup in January 2023:

  • Back 4 Blood
  • Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Erica
  • Jett: The Far Shore
  • Just Cause 4: Reloaded
  • Life is Strange
  • Life is Strange: Before the Storm
  • Omno

These join the existing catalog of PS4 and PS5 games included with a PlayStation Plus Extra subscription. Some of the most popular existing titles include Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel‘s Spider-Man, Demon‘s Souls, Mortal Kombat 11, and Horizon Forbidden West.

Is PS Plus extra worth it?

For avid gamers who play a variety of different games, PS Plus Extra provides excellent value. Access to a library of over 400 games for just $14.99 a month is significantly cheaper than buying even a handful of titles at full price.

The Extra tier is ideal for players who like to frequently rotate between different games and try out titles they might have otherwise skipped. It‘s an affordable way to play many of the best PS4 and PS5 releases from the past decade.

Casual gamers may be better served by the cheaper Essential tier though. If you tend to stick to just a few multiplayer games long-term, you won‘t get as much value from the expansive Extra catalog. But for most players, the Extra tier provides outstanding bang for your buck.

What games are coming to PS Plus extra?

In addition to the January 2023 additions mentioned above, here are some of the biggest games we can expect to see added to the Extra catalog in the coming months:

  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dying Light 2
  • Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo
  • Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Sony has promised to add "at least" 12 new titles to the Extra and Premium catalogs each month. So subscribers can look forward to a steady stream of new games being added over time.

Major first-party Sony titles like God of War Ragnarök and Marvel‘s Spider-Man 2 will likely come to Extra eventually too, though not right away at launch. Overall, the catalog should expand rapidly in 2023 and beyond.

Is rdr2 on PS Plus extra?

Yes, Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently available via PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. Subscribers can download and play the full PS4 version of Rockstar‘s epic open-world Western.

Red Dead Redemption 2 first arrived on PS Plus in May 2022 as part of the rollout of the revamped PlayStation Plus tiers. Take on the role of Arthur Morgan in Rockstar‘s critically acclaimed prequel to Red Dead Redemption.

While the PS5 has yet to receive a proper next-gen upgrade, Red Dead Redemption 2 plays and looks great on the newer console via backward compatibility. This gives PS Plus Extra members a chance to experience one of the most stunning and immersive open worlds on modern PlayStation hardware.

How many games are on PS Plus extra?

As of January 2023, the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog contains over 400 PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games available for download. The actual count fluctuates slightly each month as new games get added and older ones are removed.

How long is PS Plus extra?

PlayStation Plus Extra subscriptions last for one year from the date of sign-up. For example, if you purchase a one-year Extra membership on January 1st, 2023, it will remain active until January 1st, 2024.

During that one year period, you‘ll have unlimited access to all the PS4 and PS5 titles in the Extra game catalog. New games will be periodically added to the library while you‘re subscribed.

If you prefer, you can also purchase Extra in smaller increments:

  • 1 month – $14.99
  • 3 months – $39.99
  • 12 months – $99.99

No matter which increment you choose, your Extra benefits and game catalog access will expire after that time is up. You‘ll need to renew your membership to continue playing your downloaded games and stay eligible for new Extra additions.

Scarlet Nexus, Borderlands 3, Tekken 7, and Ace Combat 7 are other great pick-ups for PS4 owners. And the imports from Square Enix will please JRPG fans.

All these join the existing lineup of AAA hits like Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla, and Demon‘s Souls. For sheer value, the Extra tier is hard to beat in February 2023.

Is Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla on PS Plus Premium?

Yes, Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla was added to both the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs in 2022 as part of the initial Ubisoft+ Classics lineup.

This gives Premium and Extra members a chance to explore 9th century England during the Viking invasion. Take on the role of Eivor and build a new home for your clan.

As an Xbox console exclusive originally, Valhalla is a nice get for PlayStation owners through PS Plus. The game received generally positive reviews upon launch for its stunning open world and engaging combat.

However, Valhalla will be removed from PS Plus in December 2022 when it leaves the Ubisoft Classics catalog. So be sure to download it soon if you‘re interested! It‘s unknown if it will return in the future.

Is demon souls on PS Plus extra?

The PS5 remake of Demon‘s Souls is included in the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium libraries. This modern remake of the 2009 classic features gorgeous new visuals and quality of life improvements.

Developed by Bluepoint Games, the Demon‘s Souls remake on PS5 recaptures the challenge and atmosphere of the original while updating gameplay and presentation to modern standards. It‘s widely considered one of the best PS5 exclusives so far.

If you‘re up for an extremely tough action RPG, claim Demon‘s Souls for free with your Extra membership. Just be prepared to face brutal combat, terrifying monsters, and incredibly unforgiving progression through the dark fantasy world of Boletaria.

Why is Red Dead Redemption leaving PS Plus?

Rockstar‘s acclaimed 2010 open-world Western Red Dead Redemption has been removed from the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics catalog after just a few short months.

The reason appears tied to the long-rumored Red Dead Redemption remaster. Reports indicate Rockstar had been working on a current-gen upgrade but chose to halt the project and shift resources toward Grand Theft Auto 6 development.

By pulling Red Dead Redemption from PS Plus, it seems Rockstar wants to preserve the potential value of a remaster down the road. When it may eventually resurface remains unknown.

In the meantime, PS Plus subscribers can still enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2 through the Extra and Premium tiers. But the availability of the equally beloved original is now in limbo once again.

What are the PS Plus games for March 2023?

The lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus members in March 2023 has now been confirmed:

  • Battlefield 2042 (PS5/PS4)
  • Minecraft Dungeons (PS4)
  • Code Vein (PS4)

For PS5 owners, Battlefield 2042 offers large-scale multiplayer combat across land, air, and sea. Minecraft Dungeons brings hack-and-slash RPG gameplay to the blocky Minecraft universe. Code Vein provides challenging "souls-like" action as an anime-inspired vampire.

All three titles will be available to download for free starting March 7 for Essential tier subscribers. Extra and Premium members get access to the regular monthly games on top of their respective game catalogs too.

Battlefield 2042 had a rocky launch but has improved since then via updates and season content. March will be a good opportunity to jump in. Minecraft Dungeons and Code Vein are solid picks as well next month.

Does Elden ring require PS Plus?

Elden Ring does not require an active PlayStation Plus membership to play online. You can fully enjoy multiplayer and the cooperative and competitive experiences without a PS Plus subscription.

This makes Elden Ring stand out compared to most major online games on PlayStation consoles. A PS Plus membership is typically mandatory to play titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny 2, etc. online.

However, Elden Ring is following in the footsteps of past FromSoftware releases Demon‘s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro by keeping its online components completely free.

You can summon co-op partners, invade other players, and engage in PvP duels without needing PS Plus. The only requirement is a stable internet connection. Bandai Namco and FromSoftware have kept Elden Ring multiplayer accessible for all players.

Is Dark Souls on PS extra?

Unfortunately, the majority of FromSoftware‘s seminal Dark Souls trilogy is not currently included in the PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium libraries.

The lone exception is Dark Souls Remastered – the 2018 revamp of the original Dark Souls – which is available via the Premium Classics catalog. However, Dark Souls 2 and 3 are not offered through either higher PS Plus tier at this time.

Despite their status as iconic action RPGs, Bandai Namco has yet to add the full Dark Souls series to the PS Plus lineup. Demon‘s Souls is present as the PS5 remake, but Dark Souls proper remains absent.

Hopefully Sony and Bandai Namco can come to an agreement down the road to bring the complete Souls saga into the fold. But for now, only PS Plus Premium members can revisit where it all started with Dark Souls Remastered.

Is Dark Souls on PS Plus?

FromSoftware‘s landmark 2011 action-RPG Dark Souls is not currently included as part of the PlayStation Plus monthly free games lineup or the Extra/Premium catalogs. It has not been featured as a PS Plus game in many years.

The sole exception is Dark Souls Remastered – the 2018 graphical overhaul – which is available via PlayStation Plus Premium as one of the Classics catalog titles.

But the original Dark Souls is not offered through PS Plus at this time. Players hoping to experience where the acclaimed "Soulsborne" formula began will need to purchase Dark Souls separately rather than acquiring it through a PS Plus membership.

Hopefully Sony can work out an agreement with FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment to bring the entire Souls series – including Demon‘s Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, and Bloodborne – to PS Plus Extra/Premium someday. But Dark Souls itself is not included as of early 2023.

How much does PS Plus extra cost a month?

The PlayStation Plus Extra membership tier is priced at $14.99 USD per month. Here‘s a breakdown of all the pricing options:

  • 1 month – $14.99
  • 3 months – $39.99 (equals $13.33 per month)
  • 12 months – $99.99 (equals $8.33 per month)

A full year is by far the best value, giving you access to the entire Extra game catalog for just over $8 per month. But you can also opt for 1 or 3 month memberships if you prefer shorter commitments.

At any tier, PS Plus Extra provides outstanding value compared to buying all those titles separately. For less than the cost of one new release PS5 game, you can play hundreds through your subscription.

If you‘re looking to try out a variety of different PlayStation exclusives and third-party hits each month, the Extra tier supplies incredible bang for your buck.
