Xbox Boss Confirms No Mid-Generation Refresh for Xbox Series X/S

In a recent interview with IGN, Xbox boss Phil Spencer reiterated that there are no plans for a mid-generation refresh for the Xbox Series X/S. While the team is currently focused on the increased storage of the Xbox Series S, Spencer believes that developers need time to fully utilize the current hardware before considering any mid-gen upgrades.

Spencer stated, “We're kind of at the end of the beginning… I think we need to let devs settle on this hardware and get the most out of it.” He emphasized that it's not just about increased pixel count or frame resolution, but also about other factors that contribute to a game's overall look and feel, such as lighting techniques. He expressed confidence in the industry's potential for improvement and innovation.

For those eager for a new console, the Carbon Black Xbox Series S with a 1TB SSD will be released on September 6, 2023, for $349.99.

In the interview, Spencer also addressed whether popular titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 16 would ever make their way to the Xbox platform. Additionally, IGN provided a roundup of all the big reveals from gamescom Opening Night Live.

As of now, the focus for Xbox remains on optimizing the current hardware and allowing developers to unleash their creativity and push the boundaries of visuals and gameplay. With the Xbox Series X/S already providing impressive performance, it seems that a mid-generation refresh is not currently a priority for the team.
